Hardly any other place in the world is torn between tradition and innovation as much as Okinawa.
The west has long abandoned its traditions – its legacy – in favor of constant economic growth and expansion. Everything is made to be as fast and cheap as pos-sible and be thrown away the moment its warranty expires. Ancient cultural origins seem to be no longer an object of the present everyday life.
But what will remain?
Just as rapidly changing are the cityscapes in Okinawa with new office buildings, newly constructed malls or factories being erected.
Yet this small island manages to uphold century old traditions that are especially reflected in its craftsmanship. It seems to be more than just maintaining the conven-tions and accustomed folkways. Its the only way of staying connected with cultural origin and ancestry.
Yet there are some ancient crafts which are steadely disappearing from the field of vision of their own people.
In my photographic work “消失 Shōshitsu” I want to capture Okinawa’s dedicated and extensive artistry and point out that its craftsmanship embodies quality and sustainment of culture and identity. An homage to the Ryukyu craftsmanship and the longevity of a handmade legacy.

沖縄ほど伝統と文明の近代化の間で揺れている場所はない。

西洋はとうの昔に伝統や遺産をたゆまぬ経済成長や拡大と引き換えに捨ててしまった。

すべての物は可能な限り早く安価に製造され保証期間が切れるとともに捨てられるのだ。
古代の文化的起源はもはや現代生活の対象では無くなったようだ。
一体、何が残るのだろう？

沖縄の街並みが新しいオフィスビルで急速に変化するのと同じように、ショッピングモールや工場が建てられている。

しかしこの小さな島は、特にその職人技に反映された伝統を数世紀にもわたって維持している。

それは、ただ単に慣習や習俗、風習を維持するだけではないようだ。それが文化的起源と祖先とのつながりを保つ唯一の方法なのだ。それにもかかわらず、人々の視野から着実に消えていく古くからの工芸品がある。私の写真作品「消失」では、沖縄の豊かな芸術性を捉え、その職人技が文化とアイデンティティの質と持続性を体現していることを指摘したい。琉球の職人技と手工芸の連綿と継承された遺産に対する敬意である。
